Birth of raki

So many potential blips today. The delicate and intricate artefacts from the Minoean civilisation some 7-10 centuries BC, some of them with almost Celtic symbols. It is clear to see in some of the shields where the inspiration came from for some of the design for Game of Thrones!

Or the street stalls of goods: a bow tie stall, a hat shop, displays of fresh fish. Or the architecture with a heavy Roman or Venetian influence, leading down to the port with colourful boats and yachts bobbing in the sunshine. Or yet more Cretan dancing this time in traditional costume. What won out was this shot of the fire in a portable raki distillation plant. I like it as a photo but it was also interesting to hear how they distil the alcohol from raisins - and then to taste the finished product. Another meal outdoors listening to yet more traditional music and then sitting in the square having tiny tumblers topped up with sweet fortified wine. Note to self: must book holidays in future to coincide with International Tourism Days. They are really embracing the event here.
