Waterfoot Sunrise

Sue's Sunrise

Don't you just love clouds. Those large masses of water that fill our skies for much of the year here in Scotland. Usually they are grey and boring, releasing their moisture on us all too often. At times like that we hate them for the dull, wet and depressing weather they can bring (such as now as the rain batters off the window as I type!).

Thanks to Blip I have become much more aware of the positive side to clouds. I cannot think of many landscapes, seascapes, with or without a sunrise/sunset, I have blipped that don't have clouds somewhere in the scene. They add an extra dimension in terms of composition, texture and perspective that so often lifts a blip from being ordinary to something special. Over the last 2 years of blipping I have come to recognise that a sunrise/sunset without clouds is like a cake without the icing. It simply isn't the same. However, there is a fine balance between enough clouds for the sun on the horizon to illuminate and produce a spectrum of colours amongst all those little droplets of water and too much, which blankets the sky producing only greyness.

This morning was close to that boundary with grey clouds to the west and thinner patchy clouds to the east being illuminated bright red, through pink and orange to yellow before being snuffed out. The problem this morning was the wind which ruffled the most sheltered parts of the river and sea, making it impossible to get good reflections of an amazing sky.

Before the rain set in I had my early morning run along the beach and spent some time looking for The Wren's camera case which she lost yesterday. Glad to report that it was found and will be returned to her later in the week.

We had a friend and her young grandson round for coffee this morning and, as she is a keen photographer and appreciates a good sunrise, I asked her to select today's blip. So this is Sue's sunrise.
