Sloes
Evidence that the fruit of the blackthorn is fairly plentiful this year, if not a glut, last year's crop having been lost to a late spring cold snap at blossom time.
Normally it is best to delay picking until after the first frosts have concentrated the berry juice but frosts are likely to be late this balmy autumn and there is a high probability that the birds would have scoffed the lot by then.
So - a judicious gathering expedition along the local hedgerows has proved productive and the pricked, purple sloes are now relaxing and giving off their colour and flavour in a couple of litres of Sainsbury's cheapest gin with lots of added sugar!
With a bit of luck we should have a good helping of sloe gin for the Christmas festivities!! Join us.....do.
