Making your own textures for overlays is certainly not a new thing, in fact there are numerous Photoshop textures and filters for sale as well as free downloads everywhere you look. I've made textures from scratch using Photoshop tools before and have used pictures as overlays for other pictures.
I'm a great admirer of the texture work of Poppins, a former blipper who did the most beautiful treatment on the Venice canals.
Inspired today by this very talented new blipper, who goes to great lengths and beyond to create an image the old fashioned way, I set out to hand draw some simple textures (black ink on white paper) which I photographed and then isolated the black, scribbly crosshatch texture on it's own layer without the white so I could change its color and opacity and use it as an overlay.
It's a lot of monkeying around for the sake of an image but so much fun...and I feel like it's merely the tip of the iceberg.
