The improbable lighthouse
I've been glancing at this view from our 9th floor office for a few days now, not really concentrating, until my brain did finally ask the question out loud - is that really a lighthouse? Yes it is, although thankfully not in current usage, there's a far better placed one now, although before Beirut was so built up this was the main source of warning to sailors.
The Beirut coastline is fascinating. Flashy hotels and exclusive beach clubs, cranes and building everywhere, half-derelict buildings showing the tell-tale pock marks caused by mortar shells during the 15 year civil war.... and the lighthouse, of course.
Home tomorrow - early start and long journey but I can't wait to see my boys again.
