The Monument of the Hand

You nearly got another touristy photo today. Either of the harbour at Chania which we visited again today, sparkling in the sunlight. Or of the setting sun mirrored in the swimming pool on a still evening at 29oC at 18.30. Instead this arresting fountain wins out for the blip. Just around from the harbour, past the Firkas - the Bastion - is this monument to those who perished- over 200 - when the SS Heraklion sank in a Force 9 on 8 December 1966. Lots of lessons learned, as always, from the disaster but the monument conveys the anguish of those who suffered in the seas.
