Unusual kitchen visitor

N and I were eating lunch when there was a ferocious echoing buzz. It came from the remaining flu pipe where the old boiler had been ripped out. Suddenly the insect pushed past the newspaper I had stuck in the hole to prevent any more cold air from entering and flew straight towards the kitchen window. There is probably a hornet's nest nearby as our neighbour had one in their house last summer. So with that and four wasp nests in the garden this year the wasps haven't done too badly, except we had a very small harvest of crab apples, so not much for them to eat.
