Cockerel safety

The symbol of Dorking town is a cockerel, referring to the breed of poultry, the four toed "Dorking" variety which was the premier breed in the 19th century. Now many of the town's clubs and societies have the cockerel as their symbol, and a brand new Women's Institute (formed this week!) have called themselves "The Dorking Hens"
In 2007 this 10 ft high high silver coloured cockerel was erected in the middle of the roundabout on the eastern approach to the town. Inevitably people said it was a waste of the council's money but now it is much loved. From time to time it is decorated by local guerilla knitters who dress it up for special occasions. It had a pile of red, white and blue scarves for the Queen's Jubilee, a Santa hat and scarf at Christmas, a gold medal during the Olympics and now, in the season of cycle road races, it is sporting a knitted cycle helmet! The council officials turn a blind eye because the residents love it.
