Art...Nature vs. Man
Right off the bat...you might argue that cornstalks can't be art. But...both my city and my wife use them as decorations...so I'll argue they ARE art.
Now...to the discussion.
Color wise...the cornstalks are both dead, and brown, but have beauty in their blandness. Plus...they have that little extra flash of the hard yellow corn. The sculpture is red...'nuff said. The bright red wins. Advantage...Man.
Next...flexibility. Once the sculpture is in place...trust me...you ain't moving it. It is rigid, heavy, set in place. If you like the cornstalks straight up...hang them straight up. Like "em tilted? Tilt them. Advantage...Nature.
How about aesthetics? I love the lines of the cornstalks. Straight up and down with some gentle curves along the way. Beautiful. The sculpture? It's everywhere...branching to and fro, and with so many different shapes. Which line do you follow? Where is your eye drawn to? For me...it makes my head spin. Advantage...Nature.
(Heating up now.) The name. Corn. Cornstalk. Simple. Effective. To the point. Name of the sculpture? The Sentinel. DO YOU SEE A SENTINEL HERE? With my apologies to the sculptor...I don't. Advantage...Nature.
FINALLY...to the biggest point. PRICE. What is the bottom line? How does it affect my wallet, or my man-purse? The corn stalks can be had for 3-4 dollars...or for me...free from my sister. The sculpture? 3,500 dollars...I REPEAT...3,500 DOLLARS!!! Advantage...H-U-G-E...to Nature.
Summing up. Red...good. Red draws my eye to the piece. But...in everything else...the vegetable wins.
Give me the cornstalks.
