Feeling Patriotic
Patriotism is a funny thing, at it’s core it’s a great but it seems to have a stigma about it that if your are patriotic you've a naive fool or someone who’s stuck in an older mindset who says things like keep Australia Australian. Basically a bit of a racist.
But I love our country. Maybe it’s not being governed as well as it could be, there are laws that I don’t agree with and I think there’s a mask of ‘mate-ship’ and 'we’re all in this together’ that covers a prejudice that is (hopefully) slowly being eroded.
However there are many great things about this country that I do love and I think is unique to our country. I think we are a kind country who through loving a underdog is also willing to lift up the less fortunate. While there is a percent of people that have the prejudices I mentioned earlier there is also a number of people who are generally welcoming to anyone and willing to give everyone a chance, knowing that it will cause greater diversity and possibilities in the future. I think we’re a country with a lot of potential and a lot of good people with the capacity for greatness.
Mainly though, how could I not love Australia. I’ve been blessed with a great life because of this country. All the people I know and love in it are great Australians (mostly), and the ones that aren’t may have come from another country and have been given the chance of a better life now that they’re Australians.
We and our country aren’t perfect, but at the end of the day I suppose I am a patriot who wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.
