Helluva fungus!

I love finding the more unusually shaped saddle and cup fungi - the Ascomycetes. Over the last few days many saddles, Helvella species, have been pushing up through the leaf litter at the nature reserve. This one is Helvella lacunosa, which I always knew as Black Helvella, but has recently been given the common name of Elfin Saddle. Nearby were some White Saddles, Helvella crispa, and not far away, in a wetter part of the reserve, I've seen the smaller Elastic Saddle, Helvella elastica. A walk in the woods can never be boring at this time of the year.
