The description most often used about the towns and villages of the Black Forest. We visited two on Thursday - Gengenbach and Schiltach. Both had their charm, particularly on a crisp sunny autumn day. This was a side street in Schiltach, a town most memorable for its little museum with a replica pipe organ for the children to play with - a plastic tube connected the different pipes, and a foot pedal was used to produce the sound. We spent a long time in that room!

Gengenbach was also lovely, with some impressive town gates and a wonderful riverside play park. Although the main square was somewhat spoiled by the large and somewhat incongruous dodgems track set up right in front of the beautiful town hall.

We had started the day breakfasting on our balcony, wrapped in coats and jumpers, admiring the frost on the ground. Just because we could. We have very patient children! :)
