Mass mutton bird deaths
Walked along the beach at Mudjimba early this morning, and was very upset by the large number of dead birds on the beach.
In this day and age, you think the worst and suspect some kind of environmental malpractice by some 'greedy developer' somewhere (... not His Right Honourable Clive Palmer of course!)
Turns out this is quite a regular occurrence. The birds are wedge-tailed shearwaters (or mutton birds) migrating south (possibly to Muttonbird Island at Coffs Harbour) and they simply run out of steam, dying of exhaustion.
Just part of natural selection apparently.
