Careful what you say to kids & old folk.

I may have mentioned my old teacher, who, in a "singing lesson" said to me (Age about 8-10) "Brian, don't grunt.". It affected my "singing" for the rest of my life.

In an earlier incarnation as a Fireman, I had a "fiddle" cleaning chimneys. Though I say so myself, I was very popular.
Anyway one old dear I used to sweep for would, if I let her, give me the very shirt off her back if I admired it. The only reason I don't have a Davenport is she'd promised it to somebody else. After that I was very very careful what I admired too strongly.
One day I took her to task about her generous nature. Her reply was that she would rather some-one got "it" who would appreciate it than it go to a sale room after her day. (Which wasn't too far off)
:¬((
This is one of my "Trophies" done and signed by her mother or grandmother, can't remember now.
It was enough incentive to get us on a walk to Stanley Ghyll. Well worth the journey, but we never found Stanley House.

Just looked it up, somehow I don't think this is it.
