The Cottonfields of Wellton

Remnants of a cash
crop, a natural fibre
to wear and enjoy.

~ carliewired

Cotton is a mainstay crop in Arizona. It became big business during World War 1 when it was needed for airplanes. Since then, cotton production has risen and fallen as water concerns and urban sprawl have impacted the industry. Today, Arizona produces several kinds of cotton on approximately 400 farms across the state. The cotton industry in Arizona accounts for some $430 million in revenue each year, employing about 11,000 people.

When snowbirds arrive to Arizona in October the crop is already being shipped to market. This field is what is left behind when the machines have finished harvesting. As a quilter and someone who loves to wear cotton, I really appreciate this crop.
