The Friendship Cloth

A couple of days ago I posted a copy of the Friendship Cloth and was asked the story behind it. 2014 marks the 50th anniversary of my WI, Dormans Evening and last spring someone (me!) said that it would be great to have a project to work commemorate the occasion and what about a new cloth. This was greeted in typical style ' What did we want a new one for?'
Unperturbed a small group of us met to take this project a bit further and from this, the Friendship Cloth was born. The main criteria were that the cloth should be used at every meeting and, if at all possible, incorporate contributions by every member. Ideas were discussed and it was agreed that the general design of the cloth should include a panel with the main details of the anniversary but also incorporate a patchwork of individual hexagons. These hexagons would be in a variety of colours and every member invited to work their own unique design which could be in any medium – embroidered, cross stitch, painted, iron-on motifs, buttons, ribbons, photo designs etc.
Workshops were organised, those that needed inspiration were inspired, those that wanted help were assisted and those that wanted someone else to do it for them found volunteers. It was stressed from the outset that this would not be a ‘competition’ cloth, it would be a cloth to celebrate 50 years of friendship and every entry treasured.
Today's entry is by a clever friend of mine who has depicted the Tea Tent that we always organise for the local carnival. To appreciate it fully you will have needed to see the film Calender Girls as this explains the 'considerably bigger buns!'
I blipped mine on 2 July along with others, mine was the green background and 3 flower pots as I thought that summed me up well!

To be continued....sometime soon!
