An Unkindness of Ravens

Cuckoo Wasp

Family CHRYSIDIDAE

Finally got a decent photo of this tiny little gem! I have taken a few over the last year or so, but all were too far away or it was just moving too fast to capture.

As the name suggests, they are parasitic wasps and will lay their eggs in the nests of other insects – usually mud-daubing wasps, which is why they are usually only seen around house walls and fences etc. Which is exactly where I see them - on the bricks of my house and on the fence posts, where this one is (the fence is in dire need of a paint!).

This one is tiny – about 7 to 8mm maybe, so I'm quite happy with this shot. It must be the prettiest wasp around!

Go larger.
