Over the Horizon

British Columbia

We had to scramble to stay dry once the rain started pouring, beating drumbeats all over our tent. Salvaging soggy blankets and discarded packs to run down to the tack room and finish the nights sleep. Breakfast of eggs and veggies, showing the farm to Meagan, and biking down to the bluffs above the straights to wander the footpaths twining through the prairie stopping to nibble on blackberries as we went.

A solid and touching farewell. All the farm gathered to send me off with good wishes and we are gone. Crossing to Canada. Slicing through the deep metallic waters of the straights amongst the islands radiating mist from the recent storm. Catching glimpses of kayaks and sailboats in the distance. The occasional jumping fish, sea birds, and we even glimpsed wonder of wonders, a sea otter! Floating on the tide and disappearing again like a mermaid mirage.

Between the two of us I reckon we have seen almost 50 countries and a far smattering of the wide world crossing many borders. The irony and comedy of crossing into Canada on our first visit was being interrogated and searched by immigration. Of all the difficult border crossings without a hitch! Onward to Victoria and first introductions. As my Canadian friend Hugh said, ahhhh smell that socialism :) Indeed, arrival in British Columbia.

Jesse & Meagan day 1.
