School of the Air

Brilliant day today in and around Alice Springs.

Started with a visit to the School of the Air which educates 140 children scattered around an area of 521,000 square miles and known as "the largest classroom in the world". This used to be done by radio communication, but the internet has improved things enormously. This shot shows the broadcasting studio where a teacher is conducting a lesson. We were able to see three children connected by webcam starting their lesson.

We went on to the Telegraph Station which was built when the North and South were first connected by telegraph wire and communication by morse code was initiated.

Final stop of the morning was at the Royal Flying Doctor Service, much more modern now than in the TV series I used to watch back in the late 50's.

More sightseeing in the afternoon, returning hot and tired after a very full but enjoyable day.
