Today is the fiftieth anniversary of the first broadcast of Doctor Who.

A favourite since childhood, my favourite villains were always the Cybermen; Kit Pedler and Gerry Davis' cybernetic invention was ahead of its time, making their debut in The Tenth Planet a year before Doctor Christiaan Barnard performed the first heart transplant in 1967; a dystopian vision of machine-augmented people who have sacrificed emotions to become almost indestructible and immortal, their mission of conquest to make other sentient races like them. Unlike the more familiar Daleks, the Cybermen have evolved significantly over the years, whilst retaining the same basic iconic and sinister silhouette.
