The mystery solved!
A few days ago, I blipped something in the course of construction. It's now complete, and here it is. A Rainbow Stag Beetle (Phalacrognathus muelleri), found in Australian and New Guinean tropical rainforests. Males are 3 - 7 cm in length; this model is about 13 cm to the end of its jaws.
It was dead fiddly, particularly the legs and feelers. If I was a more serious modeller, I would colour in the edges of each piece when cut, so that there aren't all these white edges. But then, maybe, it would look like it was simply moulded plastic. That's my excuse, anyway.
