Another brick in the wall

Grace has recently begun to be less keen on school. Now she's in Year Two the work is getting harder and there's less opportunity for play. It's maybe because she has a late August birthday - if she had been born 9 days later she would be in the school year below and actually I think that is where she sits socially. Academically in most areas she's coping just fine and in fact more than fine in some. I really don't want her to be put off at this early age though. We try not to push it too much at home. She's always keen to read, but if she doesn't want to do other homework, then I just tell the teacher that. Why press her when she's barely six years old? Anyway, after work today I met up with the girls at Messy Church and then there was an open evening at the brand new village school where Grace is a pupil. She showed us around. It's looking good. This is her desk in the afternoons with her joint Y1/2 class. She has a different teacher in the mornings, when the year groups are taught separately. I think part of her problem at the moment is the level of change she has had lately and Grace can get upset by changes. The school did their best to prepare her and give her support. She has an amazing Teaching Assistant at times in her class who really gets her needs. Grace has had a few very spectacular meltdowns at home lately. I really feel for her. I know school are looking into more assessments etc. She's a very, very special and intelligent girl who just finds the whole school thing a bit overwhelming at times. I know school will continue to do their best and we will at home too.
