Ghost town
Bus down to the Lycian Way today. Took a 'direct' bus that was anything but (and pretty hot), but still made it to Kayaköy by mid-afternoon, and jumped straight into the pool.
After a short rest, we headed out to check out one of the more interesting towns I've ever been in. Kayaköy was one of the towns involved in a population swap sponsored by the League of Nations early in the 20th century. A small community of muslim Greeks swapped villages with a larger group of ottoman Turks. The result was that Kayaköy was left with a couple of hundred empty houses - almost like a ghost village for many years. There are people in the town today. but all those stone houses lie empty up on the hill. Louis de Bernieres has written a novel about the whole thing.
Day walk tomorrow from Faralya to Ovacik.
Thanks to all of you for your comments on my Turkey blips. No time/slow internet connections is limiting my ability to reply at the moment, but I'll catch up soon.
