Two types of technology…

…separated by an agricultural field and four thousand years, give or take.

The 'rickle o' stanes' in the middle ground is a 'Recumbent Stone Circle', a type of circle known only in North East Scotland, and there are 99 examples. This one has lost a number of stones, possibly to the nearby Balquhain Castle, 14th century with later rebuilding, but which, like the circle, has lost much over the years, with only two walls still standing.

These Grampian Neolithic circles are special because there is one very large stone lying on its side (recumbent), often flanked by two upright stones, one at each end. They seem to be related to the rising of the moon at different seasons.

Behind it, of course, is modern technology, having perhaps its own minimalist beauty — but for me, there is no contest between the two.
