Walnut Tree Cottage, East Dean

This very attractive cottage was photographed this morning on our way to Chichester. It stands in the centre of East Dean and is probably 17th Century. In 1846-7 when the Tithe Map was produced, the cottage was smaller than it is today and was owned and occupied by a William Fatchine, occupying a plot measuring 1 rod and 5 perches. It was descried as a cottage, yard and garden. Much of the village and surrounding land was and still is, owned by the Goodwood Estate. East Dean seems to be a very friendly village and in my very short walk, two people spoke to me and this is always very nice. There are many good footpaths in the parish and a good few hours can be spent enjoying the surrounding Downland.
