Jack and Jill Windmills, Clayton
In between various Garden Centre visits for Christmas presents, we stopped up at the car park by the windmills as this seemed a good subject for today. The white mill is Jill, while Jack is underneath the sails to the bottom left (known as sweeps in Sussex!) and he is missing his sweeps completely. The top or cap was in such poor condition that it is now being repaired. Jill mill was lucky to survive the 1987 hurricane as the sweeps went out of control causing a brief friction fire inside which was put out and the machinery jammed to stop further damage. Now in full working order, the mill is regularly opened to the public and can often be seen operating at weekends.
