Worm Spirit
Do worms have souls? Do they ever wonder why they're here? This is my worm farm and I bloomin' love it. The smell of it is dense and dark, like forest, beetroot and leaves. Here lives a huge population of tiger worms who thrive in leaf mulch and are apparently the fastest composters on the planet. It takes them a mere 6 weeks to transform our organic kitchen waste into dark dense nutrient rich fertiliser. They live in their designer cedar box (thanks Andy) and there's no slime or smell like you get with a compost heap.
They consume the usual fruit, veg, teabags and coffee grounds but also make short work of cooked rice and pasta so they're a really efficient waste consumer. I love my worms. Hate maggots (well documented on blip). Love worms. Today I harvested some of the dark leafy gorgeous compost from the bottom of the box and dug it into the flower beds. A happy chore. Not technically a flower but this makes the flowers grow.
Now that Noah's 9 he has become quite the young man about town. New mobile phone and a long list of questions about sex today after school. The most pressing one he felt was 'Do you have to have the sex in a hospital?' No I assured him, indeed it would be considered quite inappropriate to do so. But I see his logic - most babies are born in hospital. Once I'd cleared the air with that one, then came question two. 'Is it possible to have sex on the floor?' Yes I assured him, indeed it's almost essential.
