Day 63 – Lachine Canal, Montreal
Our final full day in Montreal and the weather was sunny although a little chilly. We walked down to the edge of the St Lawrence River, along the front to the start of the Lachine Canal. Built to enable ships to pass upstream bypassing the Lachine Rapids it was a major engineering feat. The canal was enlarged before ships became too big and the canal was replaced in 1959 with the St Lawrence Seaway.
The canal is a pleasant walk and interesting for its industrial history. We enjoyed the sunny weather and headed along until lunch time which was spent in the Atwater Market. From there we walked all the way home via the centre of Montreal.
This photo shows an abandoned industrial building right on the edge of the canal. For years, the Montreal government have been trying to find a use for it!
