Ruins of Turf Plain Lodge, St Leonards Forest

Went into Horsham today and Mum wanted to do her Christmas food shop - not that we need very much for two people and most goes into the freezer! So after lunch I left her with the delights of Mr J Sainsbury's emporium and I went off for a walk through Leechpool Woods.
I went along a footpath that passes St Leonards Park House and arrived at an area I first visited more than a month ago called Turf Plain. Just by this area are the remains of a house called Turf Plain Lodge in the middle of nowhere. The view is looking to the front door and behind it seems to have been an entrance vestibule and you can see a well laid brick floor on the right. The walls were of local stone cut into rectangular blocks.
On research in the local Record Office, I discovered that this house was owned by the Aldridge family of St Leonards Park House nearby and in 1871 was occupied by two families. On one side was Mr Peter Peters and his wife Louisa, 1 son of 17 and a daughter of 12. Living with them were two 18 year old lodgers - one a Gardener, the other an Agricultural Labourer. Mr Peters was a Gamekeeper and Woodreeve - responsible for the woods around him. Next door was John and Charlotte Nye and their new born daughter of 8 months, Charlotte A Nye. He was described as a domestic servant. Due to the remoteness of the house and lack of services, it obviously fell into disrepair and this is all that is left. It is amazing to think that so many people lived in one comparatively small house!
