Gairnshiel Bridge
The bridge was completed in 1751 and was built as part of the military road leading to Fort George near Inverness. It is now on the A939 which is possibly my favourite road in the north east for the spectacular scenery through which it passes.
In places it is hard to believe the road could possibly be an "A" grade road as it is single carriageway with passing places. It leads past Corgarff Castle shortly after the village of Corgarff (heading in a northerly direction). The bridge itself is single file, the incline is so steep the only thing you can see is the sky. The sensation is similar to a big dipper. We stopped briefly for a few photographs, and this is the one I preferred, though it does not convey the impression you get from inside a car.
In Corgarff we stopped at the Goodbrand and Ross tearoom and gift shop for a coffee and a browse before heading back in the direction of Aberdeen. An early supper at the Broadstraik Inn in Westhill rounded off the day.
