Inconvenienced
It was a beautiful afternoon and I took some lovely shots of the harbour with boats gently bobbing on the water but I found more this image of the Public Convenience more interesting. For a start, it's not easy to spot, tucked away up a narrow entrance behind other buildings. You probably wouldn't find it unless you were a local in which case you probably wouldn't need to use it. Although I do occasionally. But not today. A bilingual notice informs that the facility is closed from November through March. That's a long time to wait. Comfortingly, you are also informed that the next nearest convenience is at Y Sgwar, Abergwaun/The Square, Fishguard. If you can hold on for the duration of a 10 minute, brisk uphill walk, when you reach The Square you will find, as I did the other day, that those toilets are boarded up "Closed Permanently". The next nearest are padlocked too and although a nearby pub has altruistically opened its facilities to the public there is no sign to let people know that.
Local councils are being forced to look at every way of cutting costs. A threat now hangs over our local bus and train services and the weekly market. Cost-cutting inconveniences the public in a variety of ways many of which impact upon people much more severely than being taken short in a public place. Meanwhile the government has awarded Members of Parliament a payrise of 11% by 2015.
(As an aside, the Welsh words Dynion and Merched denote Men and Women, rather than Gentlemen and Ladies, Wales being a classless society apart from the Anglo-Welsh gentry imposed upon it. )
