Pretty vacant

This is West Street, Fishguard, which I have chosen for my One Street. In fact I didn't have much choice because the town only has three streets that are not completely residential and the other two have very little of interest in them.
And what is more, I have blipped aspects of West Street at least 15 times already.
In this shot I am looking east at the stretch known as The Golden Mile which I blipped from the opposite end once before, here.

It's a fine, mild Saturday two and a half weeks before Christmas. The sun is shining and there's no wind or rain blowing in from the sea down below on the left. So where are the people? Apart from the group of three chatting outside the sweetshop, there are very few. Most people will have driven 15 miles to the neareast large supermarkets and High Street chains in Haverfordwest, or maybe they have gone further afield to shopping malls in Carmarthen or Swansea. The farmers' market in the Town Hall today attracts a small number of loyal customers and the town's remaining shops, such as they are, will provide for the people like me who are content with, or resigned to, the limited choices they offer. In this photo you can see what was a popular bargain clothes shop, opposite the bank, now closed, and next to it the premises of the former off-licence (liquor store) now occupied by an estate agents. Fishguard no longer has a regular butcher or a shoe shop either so it's not surprising people go elsewhere.

Much debate has raged over whether the town should have a large new supermarket and if so where. It's generally agreed that it would be better located centrally rather than on the periphery. The old primary school is the designated site but it would mean a major rerouting of traffic through Fishguard's notoriously narrow and winding streets, and that would entail destruction of some existing buildings, including a pub, and possible encroachment upon the park. More discussion focuses on whether a new supermarket would be the death knell for existing shops, such as the newish Gourmet Pig deli seen here, or whether increased footfall would generate business for the town as a whole.

In the mean time it's pretty, but vacant. Do we care?
