Carrying on on the town defences theme, this is the site of the Island, this was a fort or strongpoint, situated outside the main town walls and ditch and there to protect any attack from the nearby river Niers. It was equipped with 5, 18 pounder cannon and Infantry, and was connected by a trench running back into the town. It would seem to me a bit of a suicide Job, as the fort could be surrounded, even though it came under covering fire from the town walls.It failed to protect the town 3 times in a period of 20years, the attcks being launched from the other side of the town.
