Teacher, Scholar, Brother, Friend.

Professor A C Cheyne (Alec) was one of the leading scholars in Church History in Scotland. He taught me from 1969-72, and like many others I remember a remarkable teacher, and a true gentleman. Here he lies, with his sister, in Stobo Kirkyard.

The stand-in church officer on the day of his funeral - in reality a leading figure in Scottish society - told me how coming up from the church to the gravesite after the committal service had begun - he saw a heron flying low over the heads of the mourners, unseen by them whose heads were bowed in prayer.
