Bang-on-time fungus
I expect to see the first signs of this spectacular little fungus - Scarlet Elf Cup, Sarcoscypha austriaca - during the last two weeks in December. Today, on my walk around the nature reserve, there it was bang on time. At this stage there are tiny, almost closed fleshy fruiting bodies, mostly less than 1cm across, attached to moss-covered logs. They start to reveal themselves as the layer of covering leaves gets blown off or rots away. Over the next few weeks the cups will get a lot larger and open to reveal more of the vivid red inner surface and I should be able to get better photos.
