The Bank of England

Massive doors that definitely won't open, covered with bolts and ferocious lion faces - it's the Bank of England.

Fred and I took ourselves off for a London adventure around the City. Spitalfields was empty while Brick Lane was a delicious aroma of spices (thank goodness that we'd had a big breakfast), and we found ourselves with a cup of tea and a sit down in Rough Trade listening to young folk playing guitars. I've never been to Rough Trade before. It's what a record shop should be like - lots of listening posts, interesting bands that I've never heard of, lots of vinyl as well as CDs, and tea!!

We meandered down to the South Bank for a Wagamamas and a talk with Werner Herzog at the Royal Festival Hall - what a guy! There was lots of talk about Fitzcarraldo - only a very determined/mad man would drag a huge boat up and down a mountain in a rainforest. it took three years and his team had two plane crashes and were shot at by nomadic indians - those hit by arrows the size of spears were operated on (and survived) in the jungle. Herzog has two new films coming out soon - I'm desperate to see Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call. He played the iguanas scene which had me and most of the audience crying with laughter. Herzog said that the scene had nothing to do with the film, but he just liked iguanas, and he was happy that so many people got his sense of humour. He also said that the iguanas were so good a scene that he had to shoot it himself.
