The Edge of the Pacific
Our son-in-law and daughter, John & Dede, came by early to give Mr. Fun his birthday gifts because they had not gotten to do that yesterday.
Then they went walking on the beach and needed to get checked-out of their motel room by 11:00 a.m. After that the 4 of us went to Martin's Restaurant in Cayucos for breakfast; then, they headed for home (our son-in-law north to the San Francisco Bay area & our daughter back to the Inland Empire).
Having them leave left a gigantic hole in our environment, so we decided to hop in the car to go for a ride. We headed north on the coast and made a first stop in the tiny, itty-bitty community of Harmony. We wandered through the pottery shack and then through the glass blowing house and then we headed into the artist-burgh of Cambria, which has a coastal section and a section that is mountain-like with pine trees. We stopped at a shoreline restaurant to simply enjoy the horizon and we shared an ice cream sundae.
Then we headed south to Cayucos where finally, the wind had died-down in the afternoon, so we decided to skip a Christms concert at the Catholic church to stay home, have a fire. and watch a musical video.
The Sunday evening wind then kicked-up something terrible and having a fire in our fireplace became horrible. This little house which was built back in 1942, has a fireplace that was built without a flue/damper, which is NOT a good design. So when it is windy, and so far we have found the wind to be seldom, but when it is windy, the smoke blows backward and down the chimney and into the house. Ugh! Fixing the fireplace is near the top of the list in priorities of things to fix in this old house -- gradually each item will get our attention.
So as we were watching a video, huge puffs of black smoke billowed into the living room. It was not a good moment. But we survived!
So this Sunday had more bitter than sweet as we said goodbye to our adult kids and hello to the un-welcome smoke of the fireplace.
Good night from the Central Coast.
Rosie (& Mr. Fun), aka Carol
