Happy New Year, as they say in Russia and appropriate as our son is in Moscow for the festivities.

I did not experience New Year there but did have Christmas in Moscow in 1975 at the end of my three month stay in the SovietUnion. A fascinating experience though a lot has changed since then.

We brought in the New Year with various friends including those from my time in Lille in 1976. From the attic we had a great view of the magnificent display of vibrant colours and firework saltires that brought in 2014. Whatever happens this year will be a significant one and it has started with several bangs.
