Holy Stones..

..or stones with holes in..

I found these of the Northumbrian coast on our recent trip South. The beach was covered in these. I've seen them in other parts too. Now the questions.

What made the holes? Is it recent, or much much older? It could be a worm that secretes acidic juices, eating away the soft limestone (is it limestone?), or a bivalve mollusc burrowing in.. Is it just erosion caused by the action of the sea. Or are they ancient prehistoric worm tubes that have fossilised and been preserved. The lower left stone has holes that have been filled in, presumably by sedimentary layers of silt which has hardened into a cement like bond, but the holes in this are much finer.

A lovely sunny start to the day with cloudless skies, but soon filled in and now raining steadily. Wind increasing too.

Went down the croft for vegetables, Carrots, Parsnips and Brussels Sprouts.. Ran Tanni on the beach, and now to shut the hens up, tea, shower, and then part 7 of "The White Queen"..

Fire's lit..

..and the background is wrapping paper..!!
