Ice jam-Day 2

After church today we drove a friend home who lives about five miles upriver from the location of yesterday's blip in Chagrin River Park. Bob was driving, so I enjoyed looking out the window at the river in the ravine far below the level of the street. Looking down on the ice jam, completely filling the river from one bank to the other, I suddenly found myself looking at water that wasn't covered by ice. We had discovered the starting point of the ice jam that stretched from that point four miles north to the mouth of the river where it empties into Lake Erie.

After we dropped off our friend, I watched the river as we retraced our route. Suddenly, there it was again: the ice jam. It was as if someone had drawn a line across the river. To the south of the line I saw water. North of the line, the river was filled, i.e. completely covered, with ice. We followed the river until we reached the entrance to Chagrin River Park where we found loads of visitors enjoying the sight of the frozen river under sunny-blue-skies. After lunch we took Gulliver and returned to the park for a walk, and I got my blip! The pedestrian bridge, visible in this picture, can be seen in yesterday's blip too, but from the other side. The park ranger was standing just north of the bridge as he tested the ice with his boot.

Although the sun shone all day, it wasn't really warm, and currently the temperature is 36 degrees Fahrenheit with a wind chill of 26 degrees. Tomorrow's predicted high is in the mid-forties, so maybe the ice will melt enough to move on out into the lake. But maybe not! I'll let you know tomorrow.
