Across the Lake and Back Again
Sunday was another day that started out beautifully. The forecast however was pretty miserable for the mountaintops so we decided to keep it low and get the ferry across to Howtown and walk the 7 miles back to Glenridding along the lakeside.
It was cold - incredibly cold and even colder on the ferry; but worth it to see the whole of Ullswater from a 360 degree perspective.
The lakeside walk is very popular for good reason, it's a beautiful way to experience some of the most gorgeous countryside the UK has to offer, and usually you are forced to take it slowly as it's so busy! Today however we saw but a handful of people which made it even more special.
I love to visit the Lakes this time of year, whether camping or climbing. I was here for my 40th and had a glorious weekend around Haweswater and High Street. There's a photo here that although technically not brilliant, is one of my favourites. It might have been the moon :o)
There's a certain eeriness in the quiet, but also a comfort from knowing that you know where you are in familiar territory.
That said, we love the Lakes all times of year, but are likely to tend towards the less well trod areas this year I think.
We've had many days when we've turned left while the crowds turned right and we've enjoyed peaks to ourselves watching from pointy Cinderella mountains while the tops of others heaved under the pressure.
Catstye Cam instead of Helvellyn, Ling Mell instead of Scafell Pike. Two hundred people or more on the peak, and the two of us on the other.
Anti social? Moi? :o)
More from the Lakeside walk here.
Thank you kindly Blipmates for your response to On Reflection.
p.s. spare a thought for my mate and colleague Adam, a relatively new and very enthusiastic and talented blipper, who fell off a ladder on Saturday and shattered his elbow and fractured his skull. He's in hospital but is OK. Apparently he was doing some DIY, but I reckon he was just trying to get a *bit* closer to the moon for a better shot.
