The Guildhall, High Street, Guildford

Today Mum and I were in Guildford. The Guildhall is probably the symbol of the town and it is found on countless calendars and postcards. The highly critical architectural commentator and expert, Sir Nikolaus Pevsner described it as "superb, the epitome of Restoration panache, refronted in 1683". The front windows with the pediments above are fairly typical of the 17th Century and to me is reminiscent of some of London's architecture of the same period. The clock appears to keep good time and is very richly decorated and gilded. The inside which is open occasionally I think, contains the Council Chamber and a Royal Arms of 1686 and a fireplace surround that was moved there from a house on the edge of the town not far away from where Mum lived before she was married. Guildford contains many interesting buildings and this is probably the best known of the secular ones.
