Mythago Celebrate Wassail!

Mythago are a team of Morris Dancers who are based very locally to me. We happened to stumble upon them in the centre of Arundel performing in the Blackfriars ruins.

A Wassail or Howling as it is sometimes called is held in Winter on or around Old Twelfth Night to ensure that an Orchard, often for Cider Apples is fruitful in the coming year.

Mythago perform dances that follow the Welsh Border style of Morris and are all set to stories and tales from pre-Christian Britain. The clothing however is completely different to what most people associate with traditional Morris, very much in a gothic style. A mixed team and of all ages, they all wear black and most wear heavy boots, many of which are the distinctive (and awesome - I own a pair!!!) New Rock Boots - which are probably not the easiest footwear to dance in (!), but are totally in keeping with their style. What we saw of the performance was fabulous and very enjoyable. It was so good that the weather was perfect and there were many others enjoying the performances as much as we did.
