Cowra POW Camp
Starting off from Tamworth we made our way to Cowra, famous for its WWII prisoner of war camp for Italian, Japanese and Korean soldiers. There was a mass breakout in which most of the Japanese prisoners died. Here you see the site where their sleeping huts once stood (they were burned down in the escape).
Today there is a Japanese War Cemetery which is the final resting place for many of the prisoners. Those buried here are as young as 3 days old (Ishibashi, Uza) to 76 years (Matsumoto, Kumazo).
