My Street (2)

You might have guessed that I've started a portrait project, called 'My Street'. I'll be photographing people I accost on, you guessed it, the streets where they live. I'll be posting some of those here on blip.

This is Aftab who lives on Kenmure Street in Pollokshields.

He and other worshippers were about to depart on a celebratory march through the Southside of Glasgow. He explained that this is in honour of Mohammed's birthday, which is marked by various celebrations including inviting guests around to share food and socialise (which explains the huge party my neighbours upstairs had on Friday!). Everyone wears green and white (Mohammed's favourite colours) and he told me that the route of the March passes various businesses and houses that offer nibbles for people to share as they pass through :-).

My immediate neighbours are really lovely peaceful people and couldn't do enough for me - it makes me want to find out more about them (Islam isn't a religion I knew a lot about but I'm learning).
