Brass Iron Founders' Pillar.
The Brassfounders' Column was commissioned in 1886 for the Edinburgh International Exhibition of Science, Art and Industry by the Edinburgh and Leith Brass Founders, held in The Meadows. (It won a gold medal). James Gowans designed the column and John S. Rhind was the sculptor of the statue.
It features the biblical character, Tubal Cain, the legendary founder of brass and iron making skills the biblical brass founder and ironworker, which surmounts a square-sided bronze pillar decorated with coats of arms on shields arranged vertically. Following the exhibition, the pillar was moved from the Meadows to Nicolson Square.
