After spending the last couple of days in my home city, I now want to see what it was like a hundred years ago when my grandparents were born. I found these books which give me a begining.
They didn't quite live on Hungate, just over the river. There is a large Morrisons store where their rows of back to back houses were. One of tne poorest areas of York.

I've just found out that my maternal great grandad- his daughter is the lady in the wedding photo I posted a week ago, killed himself by drinking rat poison "while in a state of temporary insanity" in 1925. He was one of the survivers of being gassed in ww1 and not able to cope with the aftermath.
