Christ the Redeemer
Well, you don't expect me to go to Rio and not blip this iconic statue do you? The view from the top of Corcodova Mountain is quite breath taking but the statue itself is staggering. To get here we had to catch a funicular train which goes through the Tijuca Forest, then a lift and finally 2 sets of escalators and when your turn round to see it time seems to stand still.
This is considered to be the largest Art Deco statue in the world, 98 foot tall plus a pedestal of 26 foot and his arms stretch 92 foot wide! Building started in 1922 and finished in 1931 and I doubt if the lifts or the escalators were there then.
Last week there was a lightning strike which hit his middle finger of his right hand. The pictures of the strike were like a modern day Michaelangelo and well worth looking up on You Tube . We were lucky that it was a clear day and you could see for miles, tomorrow the rains come!
