Dumbing Down?

Scene: The checkout at Tesco in Hexham.

Characters: Marypot, Hubby, Grace and a cashier with a 'I'm New to the Team' badge (why do we always get those ones?)

Cashier takes cucumber from conveyor and looks for bar code on wrapper but there is none. Looks puzzled. Turns to Marypot, holds up cucumber and says: Silly question, but what is this?

Marypot replies: erm, it is a cucumber.

Marypot wants to say: My recently turned two year old daughter sitting in the trolley could have told you it was a cucumber.

And they say that Britain is dumbing down. After today, I think I may believe it.
