Ducks and drakes

The normally tranquil River Mole is still flowing very fast, but at least it is now within its banks. In the past few weeks this part of Leatherhead has been flooded more than once. The pile of debris against the ancient bridge arches is witness to the strength of the floods.
The mallards spent a while looking at the fast muddy water. It was easy to guess what was going through their minds. There was no way they could swim against it. Eventually the drakes took off noisily and flew upstream to a quieter patch of water and, after a bit more thought, the females chased after them.
It was a bright airy morning but it soon turned to rain again.
